Construction on the bridge carrying Pennsylvania Avenue (Route 2027) over Sandy Run in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, is scheduled to begin the week of July 30, as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project.

Beginning Monday morning, July 16, Pennsylvania Avenue motorists should expect intermittent lane closures between Camp Hill Road and Oreland Mill Road, for installation of a temporary bridge. The restrictions will be in place until the temporary structure is completed in late July or early August.

Once the temporary bridge is opened, vehicular traffic will be maintained in both directions while crews construct the new bridge.  Vehicular traffic will encounter periodic nighttime lane restrictions with flagging. Oversized trucks will be directed to follow a detour around Pennsylvania Avenue using Easton Road, Jenkintown Road (Route 2021), Route 152 (Limekiln Pike), Susquehanna Road (Route 2017), Virginia Drive (Route 2024), Delaware Drive and Commerce Drive.

The Pennsylvania Avenue bridge averages over 12,800 daily vehicles. Built in 1927, the single-span concrete, T-beam bridge will be replaced with a new single-span box beam bridge. Replacement work will be performed by Walsh Construction II of Chicago, IL. Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2018.

This bridge is referred to as JV-217 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.
