A nighttime closure of I-81 Southbound is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 6, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. as construction work on the Edella Road Bridge in Clarks Summit continues as part of PennDOT’s Rapid Bridge Replacement project.

Crews will be setting beams on the new structure during the nighttime work.

During this time, all motorists will be detoured on I-81 at exit 197 to Route 632 (Commerce Drive), Route 347 (Justus Blvd.) to Business Route 6 (Scranton Carbondale Highway) and will re-enter I-81 South at exit 191.

A nighttime closure of I-81 Northbound is tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 17 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. so crews can set beams on the other side of the bridge. During this time, motor vehicles will detour I-81 NB, with traffic detoured at exit 194 to Route 11/ Business Route 6 (Northern Blvd.), Route 407 (S. Abington Road), to Route 632 (Carbondale Road) and will re-enter I-81 North at exit 197.  During this nighttime closure, trucks will follow Route 407 to Route 438.

Construction work on the Edella Road Bridge over I-81, located between Willowbrook Road and Fox Run Circle, in South Abington Township started on Tuesday, April 18.  While the Edella Road Bridge is closed, drivers are directed to follow a detour along Venard Road (Route 4030) and South Abington Road (Route 407). The bridge is scheduled to reopen to traffic in August.

In the event of unfavorable weather or unforeseen activities, this schedule may change.

This bridge is referred to as JV-139 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.
